Description

Monitoring Ukraine’s forests in wartime is a major challenge: about 30% of forested areas are inaccessible to ground surveys because of occupation or proximity to the front line. Copernicus services do not cover Ukraine, and no national monitoring products or machine learning models adapted to Ukrainian conditions exist.

Project Goal: Develop methods for intelligent fusion of textual and geospatial information to create a digital twin of Ukraine's forest cover, supported by a cognitive interface built on agent-based AI technology. The system will provide analytical decision support for monitoring forest structural characteristics, change dynamics, and resource loss assessment.

Key Components:
  • National Copernicus-Class Monitoring: Machine learning models trained on multimodal satellite (Sentinel-1/2), AlphaEarth's embeddings and LiDAR (GEDI) data will produce nationwide multitemporal maps of tree height and canopy density at 10-meter resolution, covering 2020–2027.
  • Intelligent Event Detection: Methods for automatic extraction of forest-relevant events (combat activity, fires, illegal logging) from unstructured text sources, news and official reports, combined with spatiotemporal correlation to satellite-observed forest changes, enabling volumetric assessment of timber losses by region.
  • Cognitive Interface: An AI agent based on large language models will allow users without GIS expertise to query geospatial data in natural language, receive spatial computations, and generate analytical reports, interacting with the system through standard WFS/WMS protocols.
  • Integrated Digital Twin: All components, geospatial database, interactive web dashboard, standardized open API, and cognitive interface, will be unified into a single publicly accessible platform aligned with FAIR data principles and OGC international standards.

The system will support regular monitoring, forest management planning, and official reporting on environmental damage. It serves government bodies, regional institutions, researchers, NGOs, and international partners, and it integrates Ukraine into European environmental monitoring systems.
