Mathematical Modeling and Data Analysis (MMDA) Department of Institute of Physics and Technology of National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” was established in 2021 by the order of OU / 1/2021 of 05.01.2021 “On changes in the organizational structure of Institute of Physics and Technology of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” .
MMDA is a part of Institute of Physics and Technology of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute .
The department continues the glorious traditions of Information Security Department in the bachelors, masters and PhD training within the specialty 113 Applied Mathematics.
From 2021, the department begins intake of students for the “Mathematical methods of modeling, pattern recognition and computer vision” educational program of the first (bachelor’s), second (master’s) and third (PhD) education levels.
A specialist in applied mathematics is a person with the acquired basic knowledge in mathematics, programming and computer science who is able to build mathematical models and intelligent systems for the Big Data analysis in any subject area, to discover patterns and to form company and product development strategies.
The key differences of the applied mathematics specialty in Institute of Physics and Technology are:
- Fundamental training in mathematics, physics and computer science.
- Close scientific cooperation with leading universities and research institutions of Ukraine and other countries.
- Bachelor’s and master’s theses within the real international projects.
- Teachers of the MMDA Depatrment are among the leading scientists and specialists in data analysis and computer vision.
The educational process in the MMDA Department is provided by highly qualified teachers, including doctors of sciences, professors, candidates of sciences (PhD-s), as well as senior teachers, assistants and PhD students. Scientists of institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, leading specialists in information technologies and applied mathematics are also involved in the educational process part-time.
Certificate program “Models and methods of intellectual analysis of heterogeneous data”
On June 24, 2021, the Methodical Council of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute approved the certificate program “Models and methods of intellectual analysis of heterogeneous data” of the second (master’s) education level.
The certificate program is designed for university students and external students who specialize in solving of complex practical problems by using the mathematical models and the intelligent methods of heterogeneous large-scale data processing in cloud environments.
Certificate program “Models and methods of intellectual analysis of heterogeneous data” is the complex of interconnected disciplines (educational components) of fixed duration, which provides professional training of students (of the MMDA Department of the Institute of Physics and Technology, of the other departments of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, as well as of the external students).
The educational components of the mentioned certificate program consist of the optional disciplines of the second (master’s) education level in the “Applied Mathematics” specialty with 14 credits total.
In case of successful completion of the educational components of the certificate program, the acquisition of certain professional knowledge and skills, and in case of successful exams and tests passing, student receives the certificate issued by the “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” and signed by Vice-Rector.
Scientific activity areas of the department:
- mathematical methods of pattern recognition and computer vision;
- methods of machine and deep learning on heterogeneous data;
- intelligent methods of big data analysis of different nature;
- mathematical modeling of nonlinear dynamical systems;
- mathematical modeling in conditions of uncertainty and competitive interaction;
- mathematical modeling of complex physical, socio-economic processes and sustainable development;
- cloud technologies of machine learning and geospatial intelligence.
Portrait of a specialist
Specialist in applied mathematics trained by the “Mathematical methods of modeling, pattern recognition and computer vision” educational program is a qualitatively new-type specialist because of combining high professionalism in computer science with deep knowledge of physics and mathematics, which is the base for artificial intelligence, computer vision and machine learning.
Due to the partnership of the Institute of Physics and Technology with leading scientific institutions and companies (including international partnership), students have the wide opportunities including internships, academic mobility, R&D within international projects, working with outstanding experts and scientists in Ukraine and abroad. Bachelor graduates have chances to make a career in the well-known innovative companies in artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision and big data analysis, as well as to obtain master’s degree in the same field including dual education program with Samsung, in which the Institute of Physics and Technology has been actively involved since the beginning of 2018.
Moreover, student can gain an experience of participation in international conferences, international research projects, and of communication with leading experts in artificial intelligence.
Department Partners
The Institute of Physics and Technology has the agreements for cooperation in student education. Particularly, the partner list for the “Applied Mathematics” specialty includes the institutions of NAS Ukraine: Institute of Cybernetics, Institute of Mathematics, Space Research Institute NASU-SSAU, International Research and Academic Centre of Information Technologies and Systems of NAS Ukraine and MES Ukraine, as well as the leading IT companies: “Samsung Electronics Ukraine Company”, “EPAM Systems”, “NetCracker” (Ukraine), “Global Logic Ukraine”, “Luxoft”, “Global Soft” and others.
