Geospatial monitoring system for the war impact on the agriculture of Ukraine based on satellite data

Project within NRFU Competition “Science to Strengthen Defense Capabilities of Ukraine”

The project duration: 2024-2025

Supervisor: prof. Andrii Shelestov

Project registration number: 2023.04/0039

Project abstract

The Russian war is causing considerable damage to the agricultural sector of Ukraine. According to UN estimates, more than 5 MLN ha of cropland was damaged in 2022-2023. There is no system for monitoring losses in the agricultural sector in the country. The project authors developed an algorithm for determining field damage based on statistical analysis of Sentinel-2 satellite data and machine learning. The project envisages the creation of a beta version of an automated geo-information system for monitoring damage to agricultural land during the war based on the developed method. The work will be performed using cloud technologies based on open data exchange standards. The result will be a cloud-based geoportal for regular (every 2 weeks) assessment of the situation in the agricultural sector based on Earth observation data, statistics and ground data. The information will be provided to authorities and international organizations to support the agricultural industry of Ukraine.
