The summer school “AI for Defense: Drones, Security, and Disinformation” 2024 has ended

We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the 2024 Summer School “AI for Defense: Drones, Security, and Disinformation”

Our Department of Mathematical Modeling and Data Analysis has been conducting summer schools on data analysis and artificial intelligence for three years in a row, and this year’s summer school is a synergy of powerful universities and institutions to achieve a common goal – victory! The school was held on June 24-29, 2024 and brought together about 600 participants from more than 30 educational and scientific institutions and organizations! The school program was divided into three global directions:

1️⃣ Drone hardware

2️⃣ AI and drone software

3️⃣ Fight against misinformation.

The first 4 days were attended by lectures from the best specialists of the organizing institutions, private firms and public organizations, experts in their field, including our graduates:

Mykola Lavreniuk, a specialist in working with satellite data, ML Engineer, a graduate of NNFTI, shared important cases of depth calculation on images, which can be applied in almost any field, in particular, object recognition from drones.
Leonid Shumilo – PhD student of the University of Maryland (USA), graduate of NNFTI, spoke about the extremely important task that our department is engaged in within the framework of the project “High-Impact Hot Spots of Land Cover Land Use Change: Ukraine and Neighboring Countries” jointly with the World Bank – monitoring of rifts and craters from military operations in agricultural areas based on satellite data using artificial intelligence. Sofia considered the task of monitoring forest war damage.
Sofia Drozd – a specialist in working with satellite data, master of the MMAD department, considered the task of monitoring damage from war in forests using AI based on satellite data, which is also being solved within the Horizon Europe project “Satellites for Wilderness Inspection and Forest Threat Tracking” – SWIFTT.
Andriy Asyeko-Nkili – R&D developer of navigation systems, master of the MMAD department, spoke about mapping and 3D-mapping and details of navigation from drones.
At lectures in other areas, the participants learned how to assemble and work with drones, how to integrate artificial intelligence into the operation of a drone for the effective performance of combat tasks. A separate training track is the use of AI to monitor fakes and Russian IPSOs.

The last two days were dedicated to the Hackathon, where students could try their hand at solving tasks that bring us closer to victory! Within the framework of the hackathon, the bplAI team of students of our department took the prize 2nd place in the field of Software! The composition of the team: Svyatoslav Khmelevskyi (2024 master’s graduate, group FI-21mn), Zinevych Valentin and Berkuta Volodymyr (2nd year of bachelor’s degree, group FI-21), Anastasia Bekesheva (3rd year of bachelor’s degree, group FI-12) and Novikov Timur. Congratulations to the team and thanks to everyone who participated!

The summer school is organized by KPI named after Igor Sikorskyi together with the Ministry of Information Technology, Lviv Polytechnic, KhNURE in cooperation with the Cyber Police, OSINT agency Molfar and the companies Osavul and IT-Enterprise.
