On February 2, 2025, a meeting of the communication platform was held with NASA Harvest Director Dr. Inbal Becker-Reshef on the topic “Satellite Monitoring of Agriculture and Food Security.”
During the discussion, participants examined the role of satellite technologies in monitoring agriculture, ensuring food security, and assessing the impact of conflicts and climate change on food production. The use of satellite data for yield assessment and agricultural changes was highlighted, with particular focus on the impact of the war in Ukraine on the agrarian sector.
A key topic was the evaluation of territories temporarily unused due to hostilities or occupation. The discussion also covered the role of artificial intelligence and machine learning in satellite monitoring, along with global food security challenges intensified by climate change. An important aspect was assessing agricultural losses in Ukraine. NASA Harvest, in collaboration with Ukrainian partners, is using satellite data to determine the real scale of damages and establish an evidence base for international legal processes.
We sincerely thank all participants for an engaging discussion! Special thanks to NTUU “Igor Sikorsky KPI,” the University of Maryland, NASA, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for their support and collaboration in satellite monitoring and sustainable development.
