The lecture on «How Applied Mathematics Helps Machine Learning?» was successfully completed with Mykola Lavreniuk — Bachelor and Master of Taras Shevchenko National University, the first PhD in Applied Mathematics National Technical University of Ukraine «Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute», Senior Research Fellow Institute of Space Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and SCA of Ukraine, Senior CV/ML Engineer TemaBit Fozzy Group, Top 1000/171000 in Kaggle.
Mykola told about the KISSA AI project, in the framework of which Fozzy Group is testing the service of cash registers on food courts with the help of artificial intelligence. This system is really able to serve guests at the checkout without human intervention – with the help of computer vision technology KISSA AI can recognize food, drinks and snacks with high accuracy and generate a check for the guest. In the future it is planned to improve the model and collect more data for training, making it possible to determine portions of dishes, object detection instance segmentation, multi-camera fusion with transformers, deep metric learning.
At the end of the story, Mykola received dozens of questions, including the question of whether he regrets his studies in graduate school, to which PhD answered — no, because graduate school in the labor market is equated to good experience. This has become an excellent springboard for successful employment.
Science is definitely worth the attention of each of us, so you should surround yourself with people who are role models, and a fighting spirit! Good luck to all!
