With the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the European initiative Earth Observation for Ukraine (EO4UA) was launched together with the Polish company CloudFerro, which was supported by many private companies, including AIRBUS, Sinergise, SentinelHub, VITO, as well as scientific institutions such as the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography Poland and the Department of Mathematical Modeling and Data Analysis of the Institute of Physics and Technology NTUU “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”.
At the ESA Living Planet Symposium 2022, which took place this year in Bonn, Germany, during the EO4UA section, which lasted three days in a row, representatives of the department demonstrated Ukrainian developments in agricultural monitoring for Ukraine, including winter crops area estimation in Ukraine for 2022. Various participants in the section spoke, including the launch of the EO4UA initiative by CloudFerro, the JRC‘s Sentinel-1 radar satellite coherence, the IGiK forest fire study near Kyiv, the TEP/Vista and AIRBUS soCAP food security. After the speeches, we had several discussions with potential partners on further cooperation.
They also held a joint meeting with Cloudferro and Sinergise and talked about the use of field delimitation algorithms for the territory of Ukraine within the EO4UA initiative. The EO4UA initiative will create field boundaries for Ukraine.
In addition, as part of the EO4UA initiative, we provided ground data on crop types and a land cover and crop classification map (2021) for the JECAM test site in Ukraine (Kyiv Oblast), which will be available on an open geoportal created by the EO4UA initiative.
